2016 BGA Dos Equis Cup Challenge

A gathering of 15 of the most interesting men of the world provided for a team match play format over the weekend of Friday, September 30, Saturday Octoer 1st and Sunday, October 2nd in Abbottstown, PA.

Dinner on Saturday night watching college football and listening to live music at The Bridges Golf Club & Guest Quarters. We had the place to ourselves due to the rainy weather.

BGA veterans Frank Mejia and Jim Frenette captained two 8-man teams in a Ryder Cup format (match play). The teams are titled “Ali” for the Mejia team and “Foreman” for the Frenette team in honor of the historic The Rumble in the Jungle title bout in 1974.

There was a steady rain that started on Wednesday through Thursday before we arrived. Light rain showers and mist stuck around for us on Friday and Saturday. The course was soaked and we decided to start with the alternate shot matches on Friday since the pace is a bit quicker than four ball on the rainy cart path only conditions and limited daylight.

The Foreman team was down to 7 players due to a late withdraw which resulted in a 1 point forfeit in Sundays singles matches. The captains agreed to an alternate shot match consisting of a single player on the 7 man Foreman team playing against an alternate shot team for Ali.

Al Solis, Water Can Classic Champion

It was a big weekend for Al Solis who captured his first BGA Championship on this rainy day. Al also joined the BGA eagle club when he holed his approach from the fairway up the hill on the tough par 4, hole 3 at Laurel Hill Golf Course on Saturday.

It was a cool, cloudy and eventually rainy weekend for the 4th Annual BGA Water Can Classic. Modified Stableford scoring as follows, Par: 1 point, Birdie: 3 points, Eagle: 5 points, Bogey: 0, Double Bogey: -1 point, Triple Bogey: -2 points.

We arrived at Glenn Dale Golf Course Sunday morning for our scheduled third and final round but the course had taken on too much water from rain on and off over the last 5 days. With it still raining, but not heavy, we moved the round to Enterprise Golf Course, only 10 minutes away. Rain finally stopped as the front nine was coming to an end. The course drained very well and was in good shape.

MVP

MVP for 2015 Dos Equis XX Cup Challenge……who was that valuable and interesting man??

Was it Jim Frenette of the RED Team that contributed 2 ½ wins for his team, and had 2 closest to the pin captures for winnings totaling $95 ??

Was it Chuck Petrilla of the BLACK Team that had 3 ½ points (basically did not lose) and posted winnings of $80 ??

No….it was RED Team Brett Coffman as our MVP of the Cup Challenge. Though he had no dollars from closest to pin, it is hard to dispute that he went 4-0 in matches, posting $90 in winnings, but more importantly in match play…he didn’t lose a match !!

Congratulations to Brett Coffman !!
