BGA Tour history…the start

By Tom Clement – November, 2005

In 1994, Don Drehoff and I played a round of Golf at Ft. George G. Meade in Maryland. We were playing a stroke play match, tightly contested and during the round we were talking about the skill levels of players on the PGA tour and compared those skills, clubs used, scores, etc. to our own games. Based on the comparison, the concept of having a group of players with limited time and skills available might want to play to an overall goal of bogey as opposed to par and the term “B”GA was born. The conversation also evolved for the first time to a proposed set of “BGA Major Championships” played in similar fashion to those PGA events. Soon after the term BGA took on a life of its own and in the midst of this first now official BGA match the “shot heard around the world” occurred. Under pressure and coming down the stretch Don Drehoff, now a co-founder of the BGA hit a tee shot that actually ended up going backwards!!..behind the tee box. That shot set the tone for the BGA and has been duplicated with other errant shots hit by every BGA player over the next decade.
